Irish Eyes: A Place Where WeatheryWorries Lap

Irish Eyes from Greg Meylan

Finding A Place Where WeatheryWorries Lap

When we were children there were tidal wave warnings and we had to leave our classrooms and climb up a small hill to just the right height so that when the tidal wave arrived it would lap at our toes but do no more.

But the tidal wave never came, so we used to practice sheltering under desks from falling masonry when the big earthquake shook us all to pieces and lifted up the land.

But the big earthquake never came, so we rushed outside when the fire alarm went off but our books were never turned to cinders so when the bell rang we went down to the sea to look for creatures and treasure amongst the driftwood.

That was far away and long time ago. Now the threats to the world are bigger and altogether more weathery, threatening global storms born from the exhausts of a million power stations and a hundred million cars.

There are mountains of debt crumbling into the plentiful valleys of hope and faith.

And the only place to find a place of shelter is under the loose umbrella of protest groups trying to shake sense from the powerful gathered in Genoa today.

And there are profit warnings and the value of the world slumps and the only place to find shelter is in the wisdom of alternative economics.

But through it all, somewhere along the way you still have to be able to climb a hill to the place where the world’s troubles only lap at your toes.
