Sevens Parade Leads To Long Lunch Hour For Workers

Teams from the upcoming Rugby Sevens competition paraded through the streets of Wellington this lunchtime, to the sounds of samba, pop music and island drums. Workers, many of whom will be late getting back to work, thronged the capital's Golden Mile basking in the festive fun.

Accompanied by musicians and performers in the traditional silly costumes, the players made their from Parliament to a reception in Civic Square, throwing candy to supporters as they went.

Starting from Parliament at 12.45pm all 16 teams travelled on floats through the streets. Some of the teams were accompanied by cultural entertainers such as Cook Island drummers, Kapa Haka and Tongan dancers from Whitireia Performing Arts School. Other teams were accompanied by light-hearted performances by actors and musical groups.

The street parade was a chance for the public to see the athletes up close before the frenzy of the competition starts.
