Today in Wellington's Manners Mall, Oxfam New Zealand staged an uneven tug of war to symbolise unequal trade deals being imposed on Pacific nations. A small crowd gathered a three-strong Pacific team battled six EU 'negotiators' over trade goods. As expected, the Pacfic squad had to be satisfied with a moral victory.
Prior to the event Oxfam Executive Director Barry Coates met with EU and German officials to express Oxfam's concerns.
Oxfam representatives explained the meaning of the spectacle to the crowd and collected signatures for their global 'Big Noise' petition to make trade fair.
The action coincided with similar protests around the world.
