Yesterday
afternoon Sekai Holland, a leading politician in the
Zimbabwean democracy movement, gave a press conference for
media in the Green Party's parliamentary caucus
room.
Earlier this year Ms Holland and other opposition leaders, including Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai, were brutally beaten by agents of Zimbabwe's current regime, for which Ms Holland required lengthy hospitalisation. In answer to a question from TVNZ MS Holland gave a lengthy and emotional account of this attack.
Ms Holland has worked extensively in
women’s development and education, was instrumental in
forming the Movement for Democratic Change party in 1999.
Holland was elected to the MDC National Executive, and works
as Secretary for International Affairs.
As well as meeting with the Green Party Ms Holland earlier in the day met with various members of the Maori Party. Ms Holland told the media said that when she visits a country she always attempts to meet with the indigenous people.
