Pakistan- Is It As Jinnah's dream

Pakistan- Is It As Jinnah's dream

By Tanveer Jafri

On the night of October 18, in the metro city, Karachi of Pakistan an event of terrorism took place that shook the people, not only of Pakistan but the all humanity. When the former Prime minister & liberal leader of Pakistan , Benazir Bhutto, after her exile of 8 years, reached Karachi in Pakistan on October 18 in the afternoon, Lakhs of people were anxious to greet her. In 1986, when Benazir Bhutto had come back to Pakistan at that time too she was given a worm welcome. But the welcome of Benazir on October 18 established a record that had never happened.

Clearly, the extremist did not like the hurdle. As Pakistan is heading towards the religious fundamentalism and the return of Benazir Bhutto, a liberal leader, in Pakistan was not liked by the extremists, the extremists did not like her guidance to liberal Muslims who are fed up with the extreme thoughts. Because of their narrow thinking these self styled custodians of Islam got done a terrorist attack on the caravan of Benazir Bhutto that was unmatched in Pakistan's history. As a result of one grenade attack and the second a suicide bomb attack, about 140 persons were killed and near about 500 were injured. There are 20 policemen and 50 security guards of the Pakistan peoples party among the killed. Undoubtedly this attack was targeted to Benazir Bhutto. But she had a narrow escape. Whereas the pores of the bulletproof carriage, she was boarding, were broken.

There are many opinions about this attack on the caravan of Benazir Bhutto. Immediately after the attack, first of all, Begum Bhutto's husband Asif Zardari held Pakistan Government and administration responsible for this attack. But Benazir Bhutto ignored her husband's statement and said that the supporters of former President Zia-Ul-Haq and the former military officers have hand in this attack. On the other side Talibans are also taking the return of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan as a big conspiracy. They believe that America wants Bhutto to cooperate Musharraf so that strong steps may be taken against the Talibans in Waziristan & other tribal territories. But one of the Talibani commanders has stated that there may be General Parvez Musharraf or after that, Begam Benazir Bhutto becomes the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the Talibani attack would continue.

Under the Bahadurabad Police Station on Faisal Highway in Karachi, the attack on the Caravan was made after 10 hours of Bhutto reached Karachi. At the time, this attack was made, there was no electric supply. Despite it, Benazir Bhutto gave a clean chit to Pakistan government & administration. Begam Bhutto also accepted that the police administration & security arrangements were hundred percent right & satisfactory. In spite of it, the failure of electric supply at the time of attack is being seen as a doubtful event. It is also being looked as a result of a big conspiracy. That's why Benazir Bhutto has demanded that the enquiry of this attack should be done by the international experts. In its response, the Home Minister of Pakistan Aftab Khan Sherpao has cleared that the Pakistan government is enquiring into this matter very impartially. A great leader of Pakistan, Choudhary Shujat Husain has gone to the extent by saying that Pakistan People's Party has itself got done these attacks, just to get sympathy of the people. Begam Bhutto has ignored this statement of Husain as a fool's statement.

Many questions have arisen after this attack. Will Benazir Bhutto leave Pakistan in fear after this attack? When & what place will Benazir Bhutto get, according to the agreement between General Musharraf & her? Will Musharraf & Bhutto be able to face the giant of terrorism & extremism, jointly? And the most important question is, has the founder of Pakistan Mohammad Ali Jinnah imagined of this Pakistan where the game of bloodshed will go on by the extremists? If we think of the brief history of Pakistan, of merely three decades we see that in 1977, the then chief of army of Pakistan Zia-Ul-Haq ousted the then Pak Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He got him arrested & sent to jail & declared himself the ruler of Pakistan. Two years after his arrest, he was hanged in 1979. After ruling over Pakistan for about 10 years, General Zia died in a plane accident in 1988. After the death of Zia, there were general elections in Pakistan & Pakistan People's Party came in to power. Begum Benazir Bhutto became the Prime Minister of Pakistan for the first time. In fact from 1977 to 1988, during the rule of General Zia-Ul-Haq, the extreme thoughts got power. The terrorism increased, extreme thoughts got spread, the number of Madarsas that spread the fundamental thoughts increased. The secular Pakistan, as dreamt by Jinnah, adopted the path of conservatism & fundamentalism.

Today if we talk about the disturbed countries of the world, first of all the names of Iraq & Afghanistan strike our mind. But a reputed news magazine The Newsweek, in its fresh edition has called Pakistan as the most dangerous country of the world, even more dangerous than Iraq & Afghanistan. It has told its reason as the most dangerous organization of the world Al Qaeda is getting nourishment in Pakistan. Besides it, the terrorists get safe asylum here. They get unchecked entry on the borders of Pakistan so it is the safest refugee for the terrorists. Even the terrorists get their treatment without any fear in the hospitals of Pakistan. The incidents such as Red Mosque are sufficient proof that favours the claim of Newsweek. Now the question is what is the future of Pakistan?

In fact, the circumstances are so out of control that neither Musharraf alone nor Benazir Bhutto nor Nawaz Sharif nor any other political party can control it. Unless all the political powers don't unite against the extreme thoughts & work with total transparency & honesty to control the worsening circumstances. For the future of the people of Pakistan & for the Pakistan administration, may become more dangerous. There is nothing to surprise at as it seems that the Talibani thoughts may be inclined to see the same condition of Pakistan as it is of their own country Afghanistan. Now it is the demand of the time that the people of Pakistan should come forward to make Pakistan based on secular values as it was the dream of Jinnah & not as made by General Zia-Ul-Haq. And it should be recognized in the world as a 'Pak' (clean) country in reality & not as a terrorist country.
