Hip hop, Hansen and Howie - NZ Music Month on NZ On Screen

http://www.nzonscreen.com/
4 May 2010

May is the 10th anniversary of NZ Music Month. To celebrate NZ On Screen presents DJ Sir-vere's Top 10 selection of Aotearoa hip hop music videos .

The selection of clips from the hip hop supremo and Rip it Up editor (aka Philip Bell) marks the evolution of an indigenous style: from the politically conscious (Dam Native, King Kapisi) to the internationalists (Scribe, Savage). It includes award-winning efforts from directors Chris Graham, Jonathan King, and more; from Behold My Kool Style, Chains, Screems from da old Plantation, to Not Many, and Brother.

Also check out a Music Month exclusive: a ScreenTalk interview with major music industry player Brent Hansen. From producing famously eclectic Kiwi music show Radio with Pictures to rising up through the ranks to become chief of MTV Europe: "I saw that my role even as the MTV Europe programme director, was to be the guy that stood up for the little guy, to stand up for the music fan."

There's a wealth of choice NZ music content on NZ On Screen. From definitive Flying Nun and s Chris Knox collections of music videos, and C4's Homegrown Profiles series, to docos on Ten Guitars , Blerta , Fat Freddy Fat Freddy's, the NZSO the NZSO , Howard Morrison and much much more. Put 'music' into the search box and go on a journey into kiwi sounds on screen.

Regarding the late-great Howie, a must-watch is 60s musical comedy classic Don't Let it Get You . Sir Howard (as himself) and Rotorua are the stars in the tiki-flavoured tale. Moving from Sydney to a Rotorua music festival, there's a romance plot about a drummer and his girl, but this is only an excuse for a melange of madcap, pep-filled musical fun. Made by John O'Shea's Pacific Films and shot by Tony Williams, it features Kiri Te Kanawa, Lew Pryme and Aussie star Norman Rowe.

The feature film is available in full on NZ On Screen. As the poster tag-line said, it's: "The big ALL FUN show for the whole family to enjoy!"

Fully funded by NZ On Air, NZ On Screen was established in 2008 to showcase New Zealand television, film, and music video. The Hip Hop Collection The Hip Hop Collection , and over 950 other titles, can all be seen free of charge on www.nzonscreen.com
