Wellington: Downtown Wellington was briefly brought to a standstill as hundreds of teachers marched on Parliament on Wednesday.
The demonstrators - led by the PPTA and Council of Trade Unions as part of a nationwide strike - demanded a 4 percent pay rise and protested changes in working conditions, including increases in class sizes and reduced time away from students for lesson preparation and marking.
The crowd reached Parliament’s grounds just after noon, where the Communist Workers’ Party’s Wellington Central candidate Don Franks performed a song on banjo penned specially for the event.
