Former Women's and Ethnic Affairs Minister Pansy Wong has announced that she will resign after 14 years in Parliament.
In a press conference this morning, supported by National Whips Chris Tremain and Jo Goodhew, Wong said that she would resign effective 17 January 2011 and hoped to give her valedictory speech this afternoon. She said she will not receive any salary or entitlements from 20 December.
Wong's resignation is will lead to a by-election in Botany, set for Saturday 5 March [updated].
She said her decision was due to the time to think questions around her and her husband's use of travel entitlements had given her, and the distraction the distraction the scandal was causing her party.
