Hi and welcome to the 23rd issue of Werewolf. In
this month’s cover story we weigh up the costs and rewards of the Rugby World
Cup and wonder why - in the current climate of austerity
- central and local councils alike have decided that when it
comes to rugby’s needs, money is no object. Rugby so the
cliché goes may be our national religion but (arguably)
taxpayers and ratepayers shouldn’t have to pay for the
rites of this chosen religion, especially when the rituals
involve men in shorts packing down in scrums.
The vital signs of the planet are also a
chronic source of concern and in recent weeks, almost every
man, woman and child in the country has had the chance to
see and hear the climate change pioneer scientist Dr James
Hansen. In this issue, Werewolf reports back on its (all too brief)
interview time with the great man.
THE
IMPORTANT BIT - WHY WEREWOLF? from Scoop General
Manager Alastair Thompson
Werewolf is all about finding a
new way to enable quality journalism to thrive in an online
environment and a key part of that effort is soliciting
support from our readers.
Our estimate is that for every
300 monthly subscribers we gain we will be able to afford to
employ one professional journalist. We have a way to go -
but it is not such a high mountain to climb.
Already
several Scoop readers have decided to subscribe on a
recurring monthly basis. We thank them greatly. But more are
needed.

brickbats. This is very much a work in progress and we are
very keen to understand the subscriber perspective on
this.
