Christchurch and Canterbury have suffered further aftershocks throughout the night, after a cluster of powerful aftershocks hit the region Monday afternoon the strongest registeering as magnitude 5.5 and 6 quakes. The quakes have destroyed much of Christchurch's eastern city underground infrastructure.

After a cold night, Cantabrians face a day of mending jagged nerves, cleaning up, and trying to get back on track toward restoration and normality. Schools in Christchurch and its suburbs will be closed today and will remain so until further notice.

At the Prime Minister's post cabinet press conference late yesterday afternoon John Key read from a scripted notes to reassure Cantabrians that the Government will do all it can to assist them.

One of my sisters lives out west passed Riccarton area. She and her neighbours have been pretty lucky. Her house is holding together, and their livelihood is all good. But she said to me that the two big quakes yesterday were pretty frightening.

It might be time for us to roll up our sleeves, and set up a sausage sizzle stand outside Eden Park in defiance of the Rugby World Cup legal bruisers and send the proceeds to the Christchurch Earthquake Fund...
