A 5.8 magnitude quake has hit Christchurch.
The earthquake struck at 1.58pm and was followed by a series of aftershocks.
There have been early reports that buildings including shopping malls and Christchurch Airport are being evacuated with the shaking strong enough to knock items of shelves and making it difficult to walk. The fire service has treated some injuries.
Phone lines are down and there are early reports of liquefaction, and further cliff collapses in Sumner.
Last year Christchurch was rocked by earthquakes on Boxing Day, with the earthquake causing the most damage hitting on February 22, killing 182 people
Today’s quake has come after a long period of relative seismic quiet with eyewitnesses describing it as a violent shake.
