New Zealand Soldier Dies in Afghanistan - No Comment on Circumstances

Today the Defence Force held a press conference regarding the death of Corporal Douglas Hughes, aged 26, in Afghanistan yesterday. The Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant General Rhys Jones said Corporal Hughes sustained injuries in a non-battle related incident while off duty which resulted in his death. The Chief of Defence Force and the Minister of Defence Jonathan Coleman both extended their sympathies to the family and friends of Corporal Hughes.
The Minister of Defence extended condolences to the family and whanau of Corporal Hughes and acknowledged his service to New Zealand. Lieutenant General Rhys Jones then read a statement on behalf of Corporal Hughes family and took questions. He confirmed that the NZDF is conducting an investigation into the death of Corporal Hughes but would not confirm speculations about the circumstances.
