Hikoi against state asset sales reaches Johnsonville
3 May 2012
The Stop Asset Sales Hikoi reached Johnsonville this morning. Companies at stake in the proposed asset sales include up to 49% of Genesis Energy, Meridian Energy, Mighty River Power and Solid Energy, along with Air New Zealand.
Johnsonville is arguably a crucial location for action on state asset sales. Ohariu MP Peter Dunne essentially holds the deciding vote in passing the required legislation, given that the government has a one-seat majority on the issue. In light of this, activist group People’s Power Ohariu formed to engage with Dunne in the hope of persuading him to abstain or oppose state asset sales. Dunne has declined to meet with them thus far.
The Wellington chapter of the hikoi meets midday tomorrow at Te Papa, and will march to Parliament from there.
