San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas. The incident which occurred yesterday between members of the Independent Central of Agricultural Workers and Peasants - Historical ( CIOAC -I) and support bases of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation ( EZLN) in the community of La Realidad, municipality of Las Margaritas, has up to this morning left at least one dead and 13 injured, according to government sources.

They added that the person who died was named José Luis López, who held a position in the Zapatista autonomous municipality of the area, but did not specify at what level.

They said that the Zapatista authorities are requesting the presence of the International Red Cross to take the wounded to a hospital, but due to difficulties the Mexican Red Cross have done it.

The sources did not specify whether the injured are now in La Realidad, a community located in the Lacandon jungle, or in the hospital of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in the community of Guadalupe Tepeyac, located about 15 miles away.

"We have reports that a Zapatista authority died and 13 other Zapatistas are injured, but CIOAC -I said that they also have people injured," said an official who requested anonymity.

He said the situation in the area is "tense" due to the confrontation between Zapatistas and cioaquistas, although they have no more details because there are communication problems with the area, which is located more than one hundred kilometres from the city of Comitan.

According to government sources, the conflict arose because the members of the CIOAC -I allegedly seized in recent days of a vehicle of the Zapatistas.

They noted that last Thursday the latter detained one or four cioaquistas and when several of their comrades tried to rescue them yesterday, there was a clash with blows and bullets.
