National has held the seat of Northcote in a by-election marked by a low turnout.
The count on the night had National’s Dan Bidois with 10,147 votes. Labour’s Shanan Halbert received 8,785, giving National a majority of 1,362.
19,900 voted were counted on the night.
The by-election was forced by the resignation of sitting National MP Jonathan Coleman.
At last year’s election 36,995 votes were cast with Coleman winning with a majority of 6,210.
At the election Coleman picked up 48.7% of the vote with the Labour candidate getting 34.2%.
At the by-election National’s candidate received 50.9% of the vote with the Labour candidate getting 44.1%.
