Christchurch could well be NZ's first GE free City.

Groundswell, a Christchurch based group opposed to the genetic engineering of food, is steadily raising public awareness of their objective to establish a Christchurch city as a GE free zone.

A seminar will be held at the city council next year to discuss the proposal to encourage and individuals to refrain from using genetically engineered products in horticulture and food production.

Christchurch City Council would publicise the fact that they are doing so in their own operations, lending moral and financial support.
