Fijian Crisis - Army Curfew - Army Background - Tourism In Fiji- Nz Boycott?: - Fijian President - Crusaders Victorious

FIJIAN CRISIS - A new standoff in Fiji tonight as the Fijian military moves to take control in Martial law suspending the constitution and putting in a state of martial law. The army has also arrested four of coup leader George Speight’s men. Mr Speight says he refuses to recognise the army and was due to meet the military commander this afternoon.

ARMY CURFEW: The army lifted a forty eight hour curfew in put in practice yesterday which has seen the situation in Suva become calmer. However a short time ago the army was on full alert outside the Parliamentary complex when a group of Speight’s men left the buildings. What has become of the departure is not yet known.

ARMY BACKGROUND: Fijian’s army runs at about 3500 with about 7000 reserves. As United Nations peacekeepers they have a high reputation internationally for diligence and organisation.

TOURISM IN FIJI: While the military is on full alert in Suva, in the rest of the country tourism is taking a pummeling. Many tourists are leaving because they are worried about the potential dangers of the coup. The central Sheraton resort hotel in Nandi is virtually empty tonight.

NZ BOYCOTT?: Here at home the United Council of Trade Unions has called a meeting of all unions to discuss a possible trade boycott of the country. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Phil Goff is talking to his Australian counterpart tonight.

FIJIAN PRESIDENT: Meanwhile Fijian President Ratu Mara has agreed to stand aside tonight and it is not sure whether he will be back in his post after the situation is resolved.

CRUSADERS VICTORIOUS: In Christchurch over a 100,000 supporters greeted the victorious Canterbury Crusaders as the Super 12 Cup came home to New Zealand. The biggest cheers were reserved for new Allblack Captain Todd Blackadder.
