Motua Gardens – Foot and Mouth – Selwyn Toogood Dies

- MOTUA GARDENS: An historic signing is about to take place in Wanganui. The council is giving up sole ownership of Motua gardens, the park that was occupied protesting iwi six years ago. Under the settlement, the parties agreed to give up ownership to the Crown. Local iwi are now optimistic they can work out their claims on land and the river. There are 80,000 hectares of land disputed by the Iwi.

- FOOT AND MOUTH: Foot and mouth disease continues its rampage across Britain. Desperate measures are being used to contain the outbreak. Farmers on infected land are imprisoned on their properties – no one comes in, no one goes out. Half of Devon is now out of bounds as it begins its mass slaughter. Local authorities have been given special powers to close public walkways. Sporting events have been cancelled, to prevent fans spreading the disease. British sourced livestock have been slaughtered in Europe. Those countries now want compensation, which Britain can’t afford.

- SELWYN TOOGOOD DIES: Selwyn Toogood has died. His days hosting It’s In the Bag made him a national celebrity. He gave up the job at age 63, believing his hearing was not good enough for the show. He went on to host Beauty and the Beast. He was honoured by This Is Your Life. In recent years, he has been troubled by prostate cancer. Former colleagues were unanimous in their praise of the broadcaster. He was married for 52 years, and had two sons. He was 84.
