Great Barrier Marine reserve decision a disgrace
In announcing his decision to proceed with the Aotea Marine reserve at Great Barrier Island, the Minister of Conservation has taken his arrogance and disregard for New Zealanders to a new level, said Larry Baldock, United Future's conservation spokesperson today.
"Announcing a token reduction in the size of the reserve by a paltry 508 hectares is both a joke and an insult to the many thousands of Aucklanders and residents of Great Barrier Island who lodged objections to the proposal.
"It is simply another case of 'confiscation in the name of conservation'," said Mr Baldock.
