A two month delay to the Government investigation into prison fight clubs shows the extent of problems within the Serco circus, says Labour’s Corrections spokesperson Kelvin Davis.
“My office received a tsunami of complaints so I’m not surprised the terms of reference and timeframes for the investigation have been extended.
“Recent revelations about guards coaching sparring techniques to inmates will also need to be investigated.
“If the safety of staff and prisoners was a real priority Serco should’ve been relieved of their multi-million dollar contract much sooner.
“The investigation’s timeframes have been doubled to look into inmate fights, access to mobiles, general inmate safety and now a review of the monitoring arrangements.
“The extension is yet another example of the Minister of Corrections not being able to handle this shambolic situation,” says Kelvin Davis.
