Outward Bound Multi-Ethnic Course

Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres today commended the initiative of Outward Bound in organising a special course for a multi-ethnic group of young Aucklanders.

Ethnic communities within greater Auckland have worked with the Human Rights Commission and Outward Bound, to nominate participants whom they believe have the potential to become leaders within their communities.

The selected group comprises 2 Fiji-Indians, 4 Maori, 2 Samoan, 1 Tongan, 2 Pakeha, 1 Polish, and 2 Asian young adults between the ages of 18 to 30.

Participants will take part in a 21 day "Southern Cross" course at Outward Bound at Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds from 1 to 22 February.

Mr de Bres said today that the objective of the course is to not only provide the participants with an opportunity for their own personal development but also to gain an insight into and understanding of the cultural backgrounds of their fellow group members.

"These participants represent Auckland's diverse multicultural society. By being involved in this initiative they will help build a multi-cultural network of emerging leaders within Auckland".

The course is being fully sponsored by Hubbards Foods, the Sky City Auckland Community Trust, the Rotary Club of Auckland and the Auckland City Council.
