Elder abuse denies human rights

Older people who suffer physical, psychological or financial abuse are denied basic human rights, says Human Rights Chief Commissioner, Rosslyn Noonan speaking on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day today.

"The right to dignity, to care and respect are fundamental human rights that apply universally. Sadly older people are vulnerable to both abuse and neglect. All New Zealanders need to work to protect human rights such as independence, participation and self fulfilment for older people."

International research shows a connection between elder abuse and discrimination and disempowerment, Ms Noonan says.

The Human Rights Commission supports Age Concern's warnings about illegal or improper exploitation of the finances of older people and the campaign to promote greater awareness of financial abuse.
