Governor-General praises
business leaders for charitable support

Wellington, 26 April 2007 – His Excellency the Governor-General The Honourable Anand Satyanand has praised business leaders for their continuing support of The Salvation Army, enabling it to keep offering services that help people in need.

The Governor-General made his comments before more than 150 business and community leaders as they celebrated the launch of The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal in Wellington today.

The Red Shield Appeal Week – which runs this year from 30 April to 6 May – is The Salvation Army’s major fundraising event for the year. The Appeal supports The Salvation Army's extensive range of social and community services that work to care for people and transform lives.

The Governor-General highlighted some of The Salvation Army’s initiatives, such as the Bridge Programme, which runs addiction treatment services at centres around the country. He also mentioned the nationwide network of Family Stores, which collect and sell secondhand clothes and goods to raise funds for Salvation Army services.

The Governor-General also spoke about the important role of volunteers in charitable organizations such as The Salvation Army. ‘Many organizations would not function without the help of people who provide their time and knowledge for free.’

Salvation Army Commissioner Garth McKenzie thanked the business and community leaders for their support, which was essential to the ongoing provision of social services.

‘You are in many ways the Army behind the Army,’ said Commission McKenzie.
