CPAG applauds repeal of Section 59
15 May 2007
NEWS RELEASE:
CPAG applauds passage of Crimes (Substituted Section 59) Amendment Bill
Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) NZ applauds today's passage of the Bill and is delighted that the law will now protect the right of children to be free from violence in the same way it protects adults.
Children have an inalienable right to be free from physical violence and treatment that threatens their physical or mental health. Many European Union states as well as numerous international and New Zealand documents recognise this right, e.g. Article 19 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which New Zealand ratified in 1993.
CPAG acknowledges the visionary leadership shown by Sue Bradford in initiating her private member s bill and all the MPs from a range of parties who have supported her throughout the marathon process.
