This Sunday on Q+A, the government’s partial asset sales and Maori water rights are set to be thrashed out in court. National said no to the Waitangi Tribunal’s compromise and the Maori Council have lodged their claim. But are Maori unified? And where does this lead the debate over who owns water?

Shane Taurima speaks to the chair of the powerful Iwi Leadership Group, Ngai Tahu Kaiwhakahaere, Mark Solomon. What does he really think of the asset sale programme? How much are iwi poised to invest? And do Maori have first people’s rights to water? And in response to feedback from Q+A viewers, we’ll ask whether it’s the job of iwi to help move Maori out of poverty.

Then, the Ross Sea in Antarctica – to fish or to conserve? Or is there a way of doing both? A crucial meeting of 25 nations begins in Hobart on Monday to decide the future of this pristine ocean and debate competing plans from the US and New Zealand. The documentary The Last Ocean has screened in New Zealand theatres and on television recently, urging protection of the Ross Sea. But would that cost New Zealand business? So Labour’s Shane Jones – the former Chair of the Maori Fisheries Commission – and the Green’s Gareth Hughes debate.

Finally, Christie’s Law represents a push to tighten bail laws in New Zealand. After Christie Marceau’s killer was this week found not guilty of her death by reason of insanity, we ask if law changes are needed and judges need to be held more accountable. Leading defence lawyer Greg King is live in our Wellington studio.
