Garnier Help Keep School Pools Afloat

Water Safety New Zealand’s (WSNZ) campaign to save New Zealand’s school pools from closing has received a major boost thanks to global beauty brand Garnier.

Up to six school pools will remain open this summer thanks to the partnership with Garnier – which includes an initial cash contribution from its sun protection brand Ambre Solaire.

Water Safety New Zealand CEO Matt Claridge says Garnier’s involvement will have a hugely positive impact on the initiative.

“School pools closing is a big issue. We know that around 156 pools have closed in the past six years and a further 130 are at risk. We’re concerned that we may already be starting to see the impact of fewer school pools on the 15-24 age drowning toll.”

“Garnier’s support - not only the cash contribution but also the on-pack and in-store awareness raising – will help us make a real difference in keeping pools that would almost certainly have closed, open.”

Garnier marketing director Shannon Watts says the company is delighted to be involved with a cause that will help keep Kiwi kids safe.

“We believe it is crucial for all New Zealand children to learn water safety survival skills and there’s no better place for them to get access to water than in a school pool.”

“Ambre Solaire is in the business of helping keep kiwi kids safe in the sun, offering the highest UV protection in the New Zealand market. So it’s fitting that we can now help keep them safe in the water too.”

Silverdale School in Hamilton, Ohinewai School in Huntly and Wellington’s Maoribank School are the first three high priority schools that will benefit from Garnier’s support, with up to three more to be announced.

Water Safety New Zealand last week announced double Olympian Lauren Boyle as its new ambassador for the Save Our School Pools initiative, and today Garnier Ambre Solaire announces her as the face of its involvement in the campaign.

“Garnier’s involvement in Water Safety New Zealand’s ‘Save Our School Pools’ campaign is critical to the success of our campaign. Not only are they helping to raise awareness of the issue, but are helping to provide funding for the pools that need it the most,” Lauren Boyle says.

“Garnier Ambre Solaire’s motto of ‘being safe in the sun and safe in the water’ has a direct resonance with our pools campaign, and also myself personally – I’m training in Australia in the open air at the moment and wouldn’t dream of stepping outside and jumping in the pool without first covering myself head-to-foot with sun cream.”
