Greytown Local Supports ‘Shave for a Cure’ Event
For Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) Commander (CDR) Karen Ward, having her red tresses shaven down to a number zero at today’s “Shave for a Cure” event in support of Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, is her “brave move for the year”.
At midday today, Farmers on Lambton Quay was the location for a number of brave candidates willing to “Shave for a Cure” and CDR Ward was one of those who got on the chair and let the hairdressers shear off her vibrant head of hair.
CDR Ward says she got involved and started fundraising for the cause because she “wanted to contribute to something that will help make someone’s life better”.
“I attended the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s Women’s Development Forum in March and one of the key themes was bravery. I decided this would be one of my brave events, but I do think those who have leukaemia or blood cancer and their families are a lot braver though.
“I also work in Defence Health so I did this because I wanted to contribute to health in a different way. This cause may just help one of our own people at some stage,” said CDR Ward.
So far CDR Ward has raised $2250 for those with leukaemia and blood cancer and their families.
