Initiatives to resolve pay equity claims applauded

MEDIA RELEASE

Simpson Grierson applauds initiatives to resolve pay equity claims

Simpson Grierson supports the Government's decision today to accept the recommendations of the Joint Working Group, to improve the raising and resolving of pay equity claims.

Simpson Grierson Employment Partner Shan Wilson says that the initiatives will make it easier for employees to bargain and resolve pay equity claims with their employers, as opposed to only litigating the matter.

It is also pragmatic to see the law change will clarify how to choose a comparator when making a pay equity claim, she says.

"It seems to be an excellent initiative, to introduce a more orderly and accessible process around pay equity.

"It's good to see New Zealand making sure there are mechanisms in place to ensure gender equality for pay in our workplaces."

Having just won the Gold Award at the YWCA Equal Pay Awards in early November, it's clear that what is a priority for Simpson Grierson, should be spread out throughout all industries and jobs across the country.

"This is a significant step forward for equal pay within New Zealand."

The Joint Working Group, which comprises of unions, Business New Zealand and the State Services Commission, reported back earlier this year with a number of recommendations including providing guidance to employers and employees in identifying and resolving pay equity claims, and bargaining processes under the Employment Relations Act framework.

Changes to the Equal Pay Act 1972 and the Employment Relations Act 2000 are needed to implement the changes. The Government expects to introduce a Bill next year.
