More people who have lived, or still live, in the Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau can now get New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran’s pension, from 21 January 2019.
New Zealand has a special relationship with the Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau. They’re part of the Realm of New Zealand, meaning all of their citizens are also New Zealand citizens.
A law has been passed which allows people who have lived in New Zealand for 10 years after the age of 20, and the Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau (or a combination of these) for five years since turning 50 to qualify for their pension once they turn 65.
People also have to have been resident and present in any or all of those countries - which means they made it their home and lived there on a permanent basis.
The Social Assistance (Residency Qualification) Legislation Act 2018 took effect from 21 January 2019.
