Tamihere’s candidacy welcome, but ratepayers will want specifics, not platitudes

Responding to the launch of John Tamihere’s mayoral campaign, Auckland Ratepayers’ Alliance spokesperson Jo Holmes says:
“Congratulations to John Tamihere for offering Auckland ratepayers an alternative to Mayor Phil Goff, who has broken his promises to cut council waste and limit rate hikes to 2.5 percent.”
“Especially positive is Tamihere’s focus on fiscal transparency and accountability. Ratepayers deserve far more information up front about how their money is spent, and abuses of ratepayer funds must be punished.”
“What was missing from Tamihere’s announcement was any kind of commitment regarding rates or spending. From what our supporters tell us, these will be the deciding issues come voting in September. In the coming months we will extract specific commitments on rates and spending from Tamihere, Goff, and any other mayoral candidates.”
“Auckland Council now is now indebted by more than $20,900 for every Auckland household. More of the same is not an option.”
