Century City Developments Wellington Cup Sponsor

Century City Developments New Wellington Cup Sponsor

The Wellington Racing Club Committee is pleased to announce that Wellington property developer Terry Serepisos has signed a significant three year deal with the Club that includes sponsorship of the $300,000 Wellington Cup, as well as naming rights to the Wellington Cup carnival and the popular Fashions in the Field competition.

In announcing the new sponsorship agreement today Wellington Racing Club CEO David Jewell confirmed that both the existing Cup sponsor Dulux and Terry Serepisos’ Century City Developments have been negotiating with the Club for some time to secure exclusive sponsorship rights for both the Cup and the carnival in the future. “While it is an enviable position for the Club to be in, having two competing sponsors for our major race, the Committee would have preferred to have been able to accommodate both parties.”

President Mike Brown said the Wellington Racing Club is very appreciative of the support provided by Dulux, but at the end of the day, the three year package put forward by Terry offers the Club a greater opportunity to not only grow the event, but promote the entire Wellington Cup carnival week, increasing the profile of Cup week to a wider audience.

Mr Brown said that the three year sponsorship deal signed with Century City Developments is almost certainly the biggest single sponsorship agreement that the Wellington Racing Club has been party to and reflects the huge success of this year’s event.

The 2006 Wellington Cup meeting was New Zealand’s biggest on and off-course betting day in 2005/2006 with total Cup Day turnover of $6.55 million. The $1.53m on course turnover was NZ thoroughbred racing’s best performing meeting and the estimated 28,000 on course crowd was easily NZ thoroughbred racing’s biggest attendance of the year.

The Wellington Racing Club was pleased to have Century City Developments come on board as the Cup carnival naming rights sponsor earlier this year and appreciated their assistance to help the Club promote the centenary of racing at Trentham. Century City saw the value of their sponsorship of the carnival and Terry, who has been part of the Cup carnival scene for a number of years and has raced several top class gallopers including the New Zealand Oaks winner Bramble Rose, is keen to work with the Club to make the 2007 Century City Developments Wellington Cup carnival an even more memorable event.

In taking over the Wellington Cup sponsorship from Dulux, the somewhat controversial condition of entry requiring all runners to wear the silks provided by the sponsor as part of their promotion of the event will cease. This will be welcome news for those owners that had protested in the past that they should retain the right to race their horses in their own colours.
