Baa Blacks go to see the World Cup
Racing sheep, the Baa Blacks, are leaving Christchurch today to join World Cup fever, in Wellington and even meeting the English Rugby team in Auckland at Clevedon School.
The departure around 10 am from near the Addington Show grounds and saw the team heading to Wellington as their first stop where they will be part of the exciting Festival of Carnivale, celebrating the Rugby World Cup 2011
“The first fixture is in Wellington on 1 October at Waitangi Park on Oriental Parade where the Baa Black’s - complete with their black rugby-style jerseys- will race to raise money for Wellington Free Ambulance,” says trainer David Cone. “From there the team have a busy schedule, which also involves a visit to Clevedon School to race at the same time the English Rugby Team visits.”
The Baa Blacks have been racing together since 2008 and have a secret training regime which has made them get faster over the years. “The top sheep are Speedy Ram and Stew Me, and I think Stew may finally knock Speedy out of his number 8 winner’s jersey on this tour, although Black Sheep may also be ready to challenge for dominance. Only the crowds that watch the races or hear the Classic Hits coverage will see the drama unfold,” says Mr Cone.
On 1 October at the Wellington Festival of Carnivale there will be races at 11.30 am, 12.30, 1.30, 2.30 and 3.30 pm.
Locals can watch the all important pre race training and dog trials on 30 September at Waitangi Park.
