French Flair Injected Into the Parliament Rugby Team
The Parliament Rugby Team (PRT) kick off their 2013 season in Hawera on Saturday with help from a former French International but local charity Victim Support are set to benefit most say co-captains Hon Damien O’Connor and Cam Calder.
“Seeing as we are in Taranaki on the day of the All Blacks-France test match in New Plymouth we thought it would be a great chance to include a man who has equal ties to both countries in our line-up,” says O’Connor.
“I am pleased to welcome former French international Tony Marsh into our ranks on Saturday,” says Calder. “He should give our team a boost but win, lose or draw we are looking forward to playing the game in good spirit and raising some dollars for South Taranaki charity Victim Support.”
The game is being hosted by Whanganui MP Hon Chester Borrows and will also feature MPs Paul Goldsmith, Kris Faafoi and Alfred Ngaro while former All Black player and manager Richie Guy will call the shots as coach.
“Parliamentary sport is a great way to get MPs into towns and regions outside of their electorate, engage with local communities and of course, support local charities,” says Borrows. “South Taranaki Mayor Ross Dunlop has informed me that he will have a strong team ready to play so I look forward to a great match.”
At the conclusion of the game an aftermatch function will fetaure a charity auction with the proceeds going to Victim Support.
The Parliamentary Rugby Team is made up of MPs and parliamentary staff and plays 5-6 games across New Zealand every year with a local charity attached to every fixture.
