PALESTINIAN MILITANTS DEAD, 2 ISRAELI GUARDS INJURED
1. (SBU) According to Israeli police and Arabic-language
press, two al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades militants (both East
Jerusalem residents) shot at Israeli Border Police and
contract security guards near the Shaykh Sa'ad checkpoint in
Jerusalem o/a 2020 May 26. Nearby Border Police guards
returned fire and killed both militants. One Border
policeman and one Israeli contract guard were injured. A
Palestinian bystander near the checkpoint was also killed in
the exchange of fire, shot by the militants according to
Israeli police. West Bank al-Aqsa Brigades cells claimed
responsibility for the attack.
2. (U) Note: Shaykh Sa'ad, northeast of Sur Bahir on the
southeast edge of the 1967 expanded Municipal boundaries, is
divided into Jerusalem and West Bank sections by the
separation barrier, with a small checkpoint allowing foot
travel (not vehicles) for Jerusalem ID card holders and those
with special permits to cross between sections. End Note.
