Kashmir update – August 4

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference has appointed a 3-member Committee for the spot probe into collective murder incidents in occupied Kashmir. The Committee after visiting Pahalgam, Qazi Gund and Achahbal will compile a detailed report. It will be submitted to the APHC Chairman and deliberated upon by its Executive Committee.

Meanwhile, the former APHC Chairman, Syed Ali Shah Gilani, has reiterated demand of the APHC for international inquiry into the latest bloodbath. In an interview he described the massacre as shameful, anti-humanist and violative of the Islamic teachings. He said, scores of such incidents had taken place in occupied Kashmir in the past eleven years and responsibility for such heinous crimes could be fixed by impartial probe. He said, the latest collective killings were similar to those of Chatti Singhpora which occurred on 20th March, this year. He said, we want that such incidents are effectively checked. He said, the real cause of such happenings is the disputed nature of Jammu and Kashmir. It is obligatory for the UN, particularly countries of OIC to act urgently to settle this dispute. He stressed the constant stand of APHC that the Kashmir issue could be settled by implementing the UN resolutions and alternatively through tripartite talks.

The Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Front President, Pandit Bhoshan Bazaz, in a statement in New Delhi supported the APHC's demand for impartial inquiry into the recent collective murders in occupied Kashmir. He said, it would be more appropriate if impartial inquiry was conducted by some international agency.

The Head of Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, has urged the world human rights organisations to carry out inquiry in the recent massacre. Addressing a public rally in Pahalgam, he said that these Chatti Singhpora type bloodshed were aimed at frustrating the peace efforts in Jammu and Kashmir. He gave instances which indicated that the Indian Central Reserve Police Force was responsible for the massacre in Pahalgam. Strongly contradicting allegations of Mujahideen's involvement, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, said, that he blame of the massacre of innocent people could not be shifted to Mujahideen. He pointed out that because of the peace process, the ground was slipping from under the feet of those in power.

On the other hand, the Indian troops have started siege and search operations at various places. In Pir Panjal range, the operation is supported by gunship helicopters. Fresh reinforcements are reported to have been sent to various places in Pir Panjal range. At Tahal, I the same area, the troops blasted a house killing four inmates. Two people were shot dead by troops at Tangdar, in Kupwara area and two more in Samba area of Jammu. Three young men were reported killed in Naugam, in Kupwara area.

The curfew imposed in Jammu City on August 2 continues to be in force. Troops are on the alert and tense situation prevails in the city.
