1) East Timor will need continued aid after independence, Security Council told 29/01/01 (UN) The United Nations must remain engaged in East Timor beyond the territory's full independence, to empower the new State to play an active role in the political, social and economic progress of the region as a whole, the Security Council was told today.

5) No extension for Timor troops 29/01/01 (ONE News) The UN administrator for East Timor wants peace keeping forces to stay there for another three years, but the New Zealand Government says they will have to do it without New Zealand troops.

6) UN Workers In East Timor Protest Cut In Living Allowance 29/01/01 (AP) Hundreds of U.N. workers in East Timor signed a petition Monday against cuts to their daily living allowances. From Feb. 1, the East Timor Mission Subsistence Allowance will drop from $109 to $95.

7) 'August vote' for E Timor 29/01/01 (BBC) General elections are likely to be held in East Timor on 30 August, leading to the country's full independence at the end of the year, a United Nations official has said.

12) Indonesia Hopes Bush Admin Will Lift Arms Embargo 29/01/01 (AP) Foreign Minister Alwi Shihab Monday said he hoped the new U.S. administration would lift a ban on the sale of weapons and military spare parts to Indonesia.

13) East Timor: Ramos Horta at UN Urges End to Sanctions Against Indonesia 29/01/01 (LUSA) Jose Ramos Horta, the foreign minister in East Timor`s transition cabinet, addressed the UN Security Council in New York on Friday, calling for end to sanctions against Indonesia and praising the performance of the peacekeeping force stationed in his homeland.

14) Christopher Hitchens makes the case charging Henry Kissenger with war crimes 29/01/01 (Democracy NOW) In Indonesia: In the first successful prosecution for the destruction of East Timor in 1999, an international court sentenced a pro-Indonesian militiaman to 12 years in prison for murder. Joao Fernandes, 22, testified during his trial that Indonesian army officers had given him a samurai sword and ordered him to kill independence supporters.

15) Human rights activists welcome verdict on Timor militiaman 29/01/01 (ABC Radio) Human rights activists have welcomed the first successful prosecution of an East Timorese militiaman implicated in the 1999 post-independence ballot rampage.

16) East Timor: Trial Welcome but Justice Still Elusive in Timor 29/01/01 (Human Rights Watch) Human Rights Watch today welcomed the first successful prosecution by an East Timorese court of a militia member, but said real justice for East Timor was a long way off.
