Evicted farmers: landless, penniless and voiceless Issue No: 445 5 February 2001
Farmers evicted in Fiji are now "landless, penniless and worst of all voiceless". This is the message contained in a special SBS program on evicted farmers in Fiji.
The program, screened in Australia on 31 January, provides the first in-depth look by any media, both locally and abroad, at the problem of evicted farmers in Fiji.
The program preambled with the following:
"In Fiji, the coup is over, the world's media have departed, but the persecution of ethnic Indians continues. The lucky ones - the wealthy and the educated - are leaving Fiji in droves. But for Indian farmers, the situation is becoming critical. The campaign to push them off the land threatens their very existence. It is an exodus which has gone largely unreported, but it could seal the fate of Fiji's Indians once and for all."
