Terrorist Speight hires Indian American lawyer
Issue No: 827 6 June 2001
The terrorist George Speight and his brother Jim Speight have hired an American lawyer of ethnic Indian origin to defend them in the treason charge against them.
The lawyer, one Navin Naidu, is unknown to lawyers in Fiji. Conflicting reports of the background of the lawyer have been published. One source indicates that the lawyer is Indian born but practised in Malaysia and is now a US resident. Another source indicates that the person is Fiji born but now resides in the US.
Naidu is reportedly arriving in Fiji today.
The preliminary investigation into the treason case began two weeks ago, but have been adjourned on two occasions for lack of legal assistance to the Speight brothers. The case resumes on Monday.
