STATEMENT BY CHIEF OF ARMY ALLEGATIONS OF MISCONDUCT BY AUSTRALIAN INTERFET SOLDIERS

The investigations into alleged activities by Australian troops as part of INTERFET in late 1999 are nearing completion.

The investigation team has conducted extensive investigation in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom and East Timor and taken comprehensive legal advice.

A statement on the results of the investigations will be made upon completion of the process consistent with security, privacy and judicial requirements.

In the meantime, I can confirm that one serviceman has been charged with misconduct with regard to corpses, in that he kicked a body. Because of the nature of his service he cannot be named at this time.

It would also be inappropriate to comment or speculate on the results of this disciplinary action. This matter is still sub-judice and to make any comment at this time could prejudice the hearings.

I have every confidence in the ability of the Military Justice System to deal with this matter.

In no way should these allegations of misconduct undermine or devalue the work of the men and women who have served and continue to serve in East Timor. They have done and continue to do a marvellous job of representing their country in bringing peace and security to East Timor.
