Australian Feds Charge Another NZer Over Cocaine

Two charged over internal drug detections

Two returning travellers were detained after Customs officers at Sydney Airport found 21 pellets containing what is believed to be cocaine in the baggage of one of them.

The two men were selected for a Customs baggage examination after arriving on a flight from the United States on Saturday.

Following the alleged drug find the two were handed over to the Australian Federal Police and taken to hospital for an internal medical examination.

A further 179 pellets, each containing what is believed to be cocaine, were later allegedly recovered from the men.

A forensic examination of the seized pellets has still to be undertaken to confirm the exact type and total weight of the drugs.

AFP agents have charged a 29-year-old UK national, described as a student, and a 23-year-old New Zealand national, described as a hospitality worker, both living in Sydney, with importing a prohibited import under the Customs Act.

Both men appeared in Sydney's Central Local Court yesterday (Tuesday) and were refused bail. They were remanded in custody and are due to reappear in court on 7th April.
