Black Hawks Return From Timor

The Australian Army's Black Hawk helicopters and soldiers from 5th Aviation Regiment have bid farewell to their mission in East Timor, marking almost five years of continuous service for the regiment, Defence Minister Robert Hill said today.

Senator Hill praised the good work of 5th Aviation Regiment in welcoming them back home.

"We are planning a welcome home parade in mid-July to formally mark the regiment's great achievement and to recognise the soldiers' contribution to East Timor since the inception of Interfet in September 1999," Senator Hill said.

"The people of East Timor are obviously thankful for the efforts of our troops, particularly this regiment, which has provided crucial support to the country's infrastructure.

"The personnel and families of 5th Aviation Regiment should also be proud as we recognise the part they have played in another chapter of East Timor's history."

The soldiers made the journey to RAAF Base Townsville from East Timor for the last time today where their primary role has been aero-medical evacuation support to Australian forces.

Three aircraft, crews and maintenance staff, amounting to about 17 people were greeted by awaiting partners and families. Post mission administration including aircraft unpacking and washing will be conducted before the soldiers relax with their families in The 5th Aviation Regiment Pegasus Club.

Another 40 soldiers returned to Townsville last night on civilian air services.

This detachment, made up of a mix of soldiers from the regiment, returns from three month's service in Timor. This is the final return of 5th Aviation Regiment soldiers from East Timor.
