Statement issued on behalf of Marine Aircraft Group 12, III Marine Expeditionary Force, United States Marine Corps in Japan. Around 0545 GMT while conducting routine training approximately 10 miles southwest of the Royal Australian Air Force Base in Tindal, Australia, a Marine F/A-18, participating in Exercise Southern Frontier crashed in an unpopulated area.
The pilot ejected safely and was taken to a nearby RAAF medical clinic and was later released. The cause of the crash is unknown at this time and is under investigation. The focus of Exercise Southern Frontier is on air to ground exercises and various training capabilities.
Due to accident investigation requirements and concern for public safety, the media and members of the public are requested to stay away from the accident area.
