Statement: General Counsel In NM Recount Effort

For Immediate Release
December 15, 2004

STATEMENT FROM GENERAL COUNSEL IN N.M. RECOUNT EFFORT

Following word late Tuesday from the New Mexico State Canvassing Board that it would require $1.4 million to move forward with legally-required recount efforts, Lowell Finley, Attorney for Candidates David Cobb and Michael Badnarik and General Counsel to Help America Recount responded with the following statement:

"The Canvassing Board has no legal authority to rule the way they have. We?ve been to court once and the judge gave the Canvassing Board time to make a decision, with the agreement that we could return to court Wednesday morning. We are committed to doing what it takes to get this recount done."

The deposit required by New Mexico law has already been met.

The recounts in Ohio and New Mexico were requested by the campaigns of the Green and Libertarian party presidential. Audit the Vote has partnered with Help America Recount to support the recounts.

Audit the Vote is a group of concerned citizens, technology experts, and community leaders from across the country that was formed to ensure that our elections are fair and accurate.
