Israeli Police Stop Three Candidates Campaigning

Israeli Police Stop Three Candidates Campaigning in Jerusalem

Israeli police and security services today arrested or harrassed three Palestinian Presidential candidates as they attempted to campaign in East Jerusalem.

Candidate Mustafa Barghouthi was arrested this morning at 11:45 AM as he attempted to enter the Old City of Jerusalem and the Haram Al Sharif compound. Barghouthi was released by Israeli police at around 2:00 after they drove him to the Ram checkpoint.

Candidates Tayseer Khaled and Bassam Salhi were both stopped by Israeli police and security services as they left a townhall meeting with voters at the Hakawati theater in East Jerusalem at around 3:00 PM. Both candidates were then told by Israeli security services that they must leave Jerusalem. Israeli police and security followed the candidates' cars until the Qalandiyeh checkpoint.

Today's harassment is part of the Israeli authorities' broader effort to prevent Palestinian Presidential candidates from campaigning in East Jerusalem. Israeli restrictions on campaigning, registering voters and voting in East Jerusalem have severely violated the right of more than 200,000 Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem to participate in free and fair elections.
