World Bank To Open Office in San Salvador

February 2, 2005—The World Bank announced today plans to open a permanent facilitation office for the World Bank’s lending and non-lending program in El Salvador. The office will be located in the premises of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in San Salvador.

“Our new office in El Salvador will enable the Bank to work closely with the government agencies, as well as open our doors to Salvadorean society”, said World Bank Country Director for Central America Jane Armitage. “We are also grateful to the United Nations Development Program for opening their office to our staff – a move which we believe will strengthen coordination between the UNDP and the Bank, facilitate coordination among representatives of the donor community working in El Salvador, and foster stronger links with civil society and the private sector.”

The World Bank office in San Salvador will be staffed by two full-time employees who will liaise with the government, civil society, the private sector, and other donor representatives.

The new office will support the implementation of the Bank’s assistance strategy for El Salvador, which is expected to be endorsed by the institution’s executive board on February 22, 2005. The strategy will support areas where the Bank is already active, such as land administration, education, social protection, and small- and medium-size enterprises, as well as provide budget support for El Salvador's medium-term development strategy to accelerate broad-based and equitable economic growth.
