Israel Turns Al Aqsa into Military Post - Hundreds Pray in the Streets

In a tense day around the perimeter of the Al Aqsa Mosque, Israeli Occupation police and "Border Guard" forces denied Muslims entry to the mosque on Sunday evening. Thousands of youths arrived at the gates of Jerusalem's Old City on Sunday morning in a bid to prevent extremist right-wing Jews from raiding the compound.

The Israeli Occupiers have announced that they intend to limit the entrance of Muslim worshippers to the site on Monday. Only those, 45 years of age and older, carrying Israeli identity cards will be allowed to pray at Al Aqsa Mosque. Many roadblocks and checkpoints have been erected and more than 2000 police and "Border Guard" soldiers are stationed at entrances leading to the mosque. As a result, hundreds of worshippers were forced to perform the Dawn prayers in the streets adjoining the Mosque, which is considered Islam's third holiest site.

A large number of Israeli troops have been deployed on the site of Al Aqsa Mosque, and its plaza and the Old City have been turned into a military post. Earlier on Sunday morning, Israeli Occupation forces set up a network of closed circuit surveillance cameras at the mosque entrances, the Al Aqsa Institution for Building Islamic Holy Sites reported.

Israeli Troops Wound 5 Palestinians, Arrest 7 others

Israeli Occupation troops wounded five Palestinians yesterday in the town of Durra, southeast of Hebron and arrested seven others in the village of Barqeen, near Jenin. Medics and other witnesses said that Maher Abu Ras, 15, and four others received medical attention at the clinic in Durra after being shot and hurt by tear-gas canisters fired by Israeli soldiers. Witnesses said that violent clashes erupted yesterday between local youngsters and Israeli Occupation troops following earlier beatings handed out by the soldiers in the downtown area.

At least seven Palestinian residents were reportedly taken prisoner in the village of Barqeen, according to local residents who said that Israeli soldiers stormed the village and blockaded a number of houses, firing stun grenades and terrorising the inhabitants.

On The Besieged Palestinian President

To the uncritical eye, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas looks like an ordinary statesman residing over an equally ordinary political reality. Nothing could be further from the truth.

From The Hebrew: The Theft of Trees

Over 100,000 trees have been removed. Some of these have turned up mysteriously in Israel, being sold for up to 25,000 shekels (A$7,500). For the Palestinians the trees have an enormous economic significance. An olive tree is not just a tree but often their major source of income. It also has a cultural and spiritual meaning to the Palestinians, being also the family's wealth, often inherited from previous generations and destined to be for their offspring.

Candlelit Vigil – Saturday 14th May

7:00pm – 8:00pm @ Civic Square

Al Nakba - Commemorating 57 Years of Palestinian Dispossession

The State of Israel was declared on the 14th May 1948. 750,000 Palestinians were forced to flee their homes, while others were massacred. Today six million Palestinians remain displaced around the world. The state that was allocated to them by the UN has been consistently denied. International humanitarian law is broken again and again as the illegal Israeli Occupation continues.

The ‘Wellington Zionist Society’ is meeting at the City Gallery this Saturday to celebrate Israel’s ‘independence’ day. 57 years of ethnic cleansing is nothing to celebrate!

Please join us in a candlelit vigil to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
