PM urges world leaders to condemn terrorism

Prime Minister Tony Blair at a press conference in New DelhiTony Blair is hoping a 'very strong statement' on terrorism will come out of next week's United Nations Summit.

Speaking in New Delhi, at the launch of an India-EU Strategic Partnership, the Prime Minister told journalists:

"One thing I hope that will come is the reiteration of a very very strong statement from the whole of the international community that we not merely condemn terrorism and condemn those that incite terrorism, but that we expect the condemnation and the resolutions of the United Nations to be carried through, and carried through by everybody."

The 2005 World Summit, to be held from 14 to 16 September at UN headquarters in New York, will bring together more than 170 heads of state and government.

It is being described as a 'once-in-a-generation opportunity to take bold decisions' in the areas of development, security, human rights and reform of the UN.

The PM went on to say there was 'no question' that the international community 'speaks as one' on the issue of terrorism and with 'passion as a result of the experiences we have all had.'
