Aussie gays warn of hate campaign by sect

Melbourne-based gay rights group, Civil Union Action (CUA), has warned that the secretive sect Exclusive Brethren could flare up hatred of homosexuals in Victoria's upcoming state election campaign, while a Liberal MP admitted to meeting with the group.

"Victorian gay and lesbian people must prepare for a nasty, dirty campaign against them in the upcoming state election," CUA spokesperson, John Kloprogge said.

The Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Board is investigating the Exclusive Brethren's role in this year's Tasmanian state elections, for incitement to hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation.

"Civil Union Action will not tolerate a campaign to flare up hatred of gay and lesbian people," CUA spokesperson John Kloprogge said.

The warning comes as the Liberal Party's leader in the state's Upper House, Phillip Davis, admitted to meeting with the secretive sect, according to ABC Regional Online. The Liberal Party is the main opposition party in the state.

"All political parties must declare their dealings with religious groups like the Exclusive Brethren," Mr Kloprogge concluded.
