Death of Activist in Mexico

Aotearoa Independent Media Centre Statement on the situation in Oaxaca, Mexico

Death of Activist in Mexico

The Aotearoa Independent Media Centre (AIMC) deplores and opposes the brutal actions taken by the Mexican state against its own people. We send our support and condolences to the friends and family members of those recently murdered, wounded and/or traumatised by this act of repression in Oaxaca.

We also acknowledge here the murder of Brad Will, the Indymedia activist from New York, U.S.A. Brad was killed on October 27, 2006, in Oaxaca, Mexico, while working as a journalist for the global Indymedia network. He was murdered while documenting a paramilitary assault on the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca, a fusion of striking local teachers and other community organisations demanding democracy in Mexico.

AIMC is devastated by the death of an inspiring activist who was documenting the people of Oaxaca's struggle for justice. We are sending a message of solidarity to the New York City Independent Media Center who are mourning the loss of a dedicated Indymedia activist, to Brad's family and friends who have lost their loved one, and to the people of Oaxaca who are currently facing brutal state repression.

Our movement has its roots in Mexico where the Zapatistas rose up for real democracy, justice and freedom on 1st January, 1994. The Zapatistas initiated a global movement against neo-liberalism which has led to anti-capitalist protests all around the world against the World Trade Organisation, the G8, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Indymedia activists have often been faced with immense repression for documenting these protests on the side of the people and not the capitalist media. We remember what happened at the G8 in Genoa in 2001and 2003 in Evian when cops attacked dozens of people who were sleeping at the Indymedia Centres.

Now one of our friends is dead - murdered by the Mexican State. We will not forget Brad and the others murdered in Oaxaca and we will keep on fighting for a better world.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
