Closest Neighbor Assists In Tsunami Relief Program

The Interim Government of the autonomous Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville today donated cash assistance to Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare to assist in the relief program for Tsunami victims in Western and Choiseul Provinces.

PNG’s High Commissioner, His Excellency Parai Tamei delivered a cash donation of $50,000 Kina (approximately SBD$120,000) to Hon Sogavare at the Prime Ministers Office this afternoon.

Mr Tamei said the Interim President Joseph Kabui and the people of Bougainville expressed shock at the devastation caused by the Tsunami that hit Western and Choiseul provinces on April 2.

Bougainville which shares a 45 minute boat-ride border with the affected provinces also felt the impact of the quake and subsequent Tsunami that killed at least 43 people on the official records.

Mr Tamei said Bougainville shared difficulties in rehabilitation resources with Solomon Islands but felt responsible to dig deep into their pockets to help the affected people.

“This donation comes right from the heart of the people of Bougainville,” Mr Tamei said.

Prime Minister Sogavare said the donation is very important and timely to meet the needs of victims at this time.

“The donation will go a long way to make life comfortable for those affected,” Mr Sogavare said.

He thanked the leaders and people of Bougainville for their heartily assistance to rehabilitate their neighbours.
